Introduction:

You just upgraded to Point ® version 5.2 a couple of weeks ago. Now you realize that you have misplaced the 1003 on that loan you closed last month and you need to ship the file. When you print a new 1003, you get the 2006 version. You need the old form but it’s gone. What to do?

Solution:

You can keep all of the old forms you want. You simply rename them from your old version and place them in the new forms directory of your 5.2 installation. You then create a new print group to hold them. It actually sounds simpler than it is. There are a number of little things you have to do. This paper will walk you through the process and give you some examples.

For the more technically adept, here’s a shortcut:

  1. Copy the files you want from the old version of Point (from the PCL directory). Be sure to include both the FRM and the PDT files.
  2. Rename them with a slightly different prefix – whatever naming convention you want to use.
  3. Save them in the new Point PCL directory (Winpoint\PCL).
  4. Open the BRWPG.ini file fin the Winpoint\PCL directory.
  5. Create a new GROUP section or sections using a sequential number at the end of the “GROUP”.
  6. Set the Name key of each group to whatever you want to call it.
  7. Set the form entries up (Form0=, Form1=, etc.) as shown in step 4, D-F.

Step 1 – Copy Old

Hopefully, you still have an old version of Point. If not, you may have to reinstall it from disk. What you need are the forms from the winpoint\PCL directory. You’re looking for files with a PDT and FRM extension. Point forms need both of these files for the full definition of each form.

  1. When you have navigated to the PCL directory, click on the Name heading in Explorer. This sorts the files by name.
  2. Scroll down until you find the forms you want. Hold down the Ctrl key while you click each file. Don’t forget to click at least 2 files for each form.
  3. When you have selected the files you want, copy them by hitting the Ctrl-C keys.
  4. Make a new directory by clicking on the File | New | Folder of Explorer. Name the file whatever you want then double-click on it to open it.
  5. Paste the files you copied by hitting the Ctrl-V keys. You now have them in a nice neat place.

Step 2 – Rename

  1. Rename each file in the new directory. The easiest scheme may be to preface the old file name with the Point version like “5.0”, 4.3, etc. The simplest way to rename a bunch of files is to select the first file and hit Alt-F-M. This lets you edit the name. When the name is in edit mode, hit the back arrow so you are at the first of the name and type in your prefix.
  2. When you’re done editing the name, hit Enter, press the down arrow, and repeat.

Step 3 – Copy

Copy all of the files you have renamed to the new installation directory (usually C:\Winpoint\PCL). You’re now ready for the print group editing.

Step 4 –   Make New Print Group

  1. In the PCL directory, there should be a file called BRWPG.ini. Locate this file and double-click on it. This should open the file in Windows Notepad.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and create a new print group by typing:

[GROUPX]

where the "X" is a sequential number. (You don't want 2 groups with the same number.)

  1. Under the new group section, type

Name=TheNameOfYourGroup

Replace “TheNameOfYourGroup” with the name you want to call the group. You can use space if you want.

  1. Underneath that, you will make the forms entries. These entries are in the form of

FormX=NameYouWantToCallIt | filename,G

The “X” is for a number from 0 up to 99. Type a descriptive name in the “NameYouWantToCallIt” area.

  1. Next, type a pipe character (Shift-\ just above the enter key on most keyboards). Next, type the filename without the extension. So LNAPP1.FRM would be LNAPP1 without the “FRM”.
  2. If the form should be printed on legal-sized paper, include the comma and the “G” after the file name; otherwise, skip it.
  3. Repeat this process (sub-steps D through F) until you have entered all the forms you want for this group. You can create multiple groups if you want.

Step 5 –   Save The ini File

  1. Save the text file you have just edited by hitting Ctrl-S.
  2. If you want to share the print groups in this file with others that use the same templates directory, save this file in the templates directory under the PrintGroups directory. The groups in this file will then show up in the print group tabs.

Step 6 – Test

  1. Open Point, open a borrower file, and print (Ctrl-P).
  2. When the print options window opens, click on the Groups tab.
  3. Click on the group you just created and deselect any form you don’t want to print.
  4. In the Output Option drop-down, select Print Preview and click on the Print button. You should see your forms magically appear.

Example:

There are examples and screens below. This example sets up the old loan application in a group called Test Forms Group.

Selecting the loan application files in Windows Explorer

Opening the BRWPG.ini file (double-click).

Setting up the form group in Windows Notepad.

Testing the new group – print preview the old application.
